It's Not Just Music

Classical Road Show offers (optional) professional workshops in complementary disciplines, to enhance the children’s enjoyment.

Art & History Projects

Each year, our performances are complemented by a creative art or history project related to the theme of the performance.

Theatre Art workshops

Our stunning sets have been designed by artist, Maureen Giddings and created in collaboration with schools.  The back-cloth for The Battle of Trafalgar was painted by teams of year 6 children on the Hall floor of Westfield Primary School, with help from Headteacher Margaret Ashby, Sheila Ford, Jo Waldron and Jane Olds. The main mast was painted by Debbie Phillips, Community Manager of BARCLAYS, which supported the project.

Rhythm & Song workshops

These take place in schools and are led by the dedicated and inspirational singer and composer,  Brenda Rattray. They feature pulse and gospel music.

The children, in groups of  20 or 30, stamp and clap, throw their voices from one end of the room to the other, explore dynamics, expression, hold their parts in two-three-four-part singing, pushing their accomplishments to the edge of their ability – and then an inch or two further, gaining visibly in confidence.   After one, Danielle Brewer aged 11 from Crawley Ridge said "I'm in the best mood I've ever been in, in my whole life".

Composing workshops

These workshops have been conducted in the past by Adam Gorb, Richard Brown and Owen Bourne.

Richard encourages compostion in schools, giving an introductory talk with advice on rhythms, notes, lyrics and instrumentation. This lively session ends with impromptu pieces being performed on a variety of instruments by the audience in groups. After 4 – 6 weeks, he then conducts workshops for small groups of children, hearing their compositions and taking further their initial ideas.

The finished pieces are given their premiere performances in school assemblies and often the best song is orchestrated and performed in our concerts by the young composers.

Owen gave a lively talk on composing down the ages and uses his workshop group to illustrate techniques from Tudor to modern times.

Art projects in schools

The Teachers’ packs often include guidance on art projects which teachers may conduct in the classroom. They have resulted, for instance, in our concert halls being adorned with African shields and our children attending, transformed by Aboriginal face paint. These artistic touches enliven concert halls and create great ambience.

Dressing up is fun and gives the children a tread-the-boards performance feeling. Their improvised costumes are wonderful and even minimal disguise of school uniform makes a difference.
