DREAMTIME TALES
music
RICHARD BROWN, lyrics NIGEL WILLIAMS
DREAMTIME TALES ; tales from Aboriginal folklore were
the inspiration for this beautiful piece written by Richard Brown, who
conducted its premiere to great acclaim in Guildford in March 2000. The
work was commissioned by Classical Road Show with funds from the Millennium
Festival Awards for All scheme.
The tales, interspersed with historical narrative, are
set to atmospheric music of great breadth, charm and sweeping harmonies.
The haunting tones of the didgeridoo blend magically with the sophisticated
strings and wind of the symphony orchestra and as ever, the audience participation
is paramount.
Children are invited to use this term also to construct
and decorate their own “aboriginal” clap-sticks and to use
the earth colours and symbols of old Australia in their art classes. Instructions
for this are included in the teachers’ pack.
The concert lasts for one hour and the audience is invited
to come in Aussie gear, with painted aboriginal patterns featuring strongly
on T shirts and faces. This together with a stunning backdrop painted
by Maureen Giddings and her team makes it easy to climb aboard Captain
Cook’s ship and experience the thrill of a new and timeless culture.
