BATTLE OF TRAFALGAR

music DAVID LYON, libretto TERESA COLLARD

TRAFALGAR, composed by David Lyon in 1982, is an exciting musical re-enactment of the famous battle, presented in dramatic form, featuring a large orchestra, a troupe of dancers, some actors and - most important of all - singing by our audience of children. (A wind-band version is also available.)

The piece was premiered at the Milton Keynes Festival in 1982 and has since had several accredited performances around the country, including a four-day tour of local schools for the Bristol Children's Festival and a special production for Anglia TV in 1983.

Teresa Collard's script and lyrics, scrupulously researched for authentic details, excitingly re-create the events leading to the historic battle, culminating in Nelson's death and funeral procession. The Narrator (a professional actor) acts and sings the part of Nelson, supported by the ship's band and crew (a selected choir, actors and dancers from local schools.)

The audience of children play the part of two ships' companies, HMS Victory and Royal Sovereign, singing specially arranged sea shanties in unison and counterpoint. School uniforms may be disguised by distinguishing coloured neckerchiefs!

Teachers’ packs, as well as songs and optional recorder parts, contain a well researched history project for complementary studies, revealing little-known facts about Nelson's upbringing, life aboard the Victory and the Trafalgar battle plan. There is also an optional Quiz and Short Essay Prize, which invites pupils’ imaginations to re-live the events of 1805.
