WIDECOMBE FAIR
music RICHARD BROWN, lyrics NIGEL WILLIAMS
Widecombe Fair is a tale of smuggling, wrecking
and romance, set in the early 19th century on the Devon coast; history
re-created with a touch of poetic licence. The drama unfolds, narrated
by actors, brilliantly illustrated by the orchestra and of course, sung
by our entire audience of children.
The hero of the story is young Dickon Trevaun, who journeys
to Widecombe Fair in company with his wicked Uncle Tom Cobleigh and Tom's
ruthless gang of smugglers and cut-throats. The gang have sinister business
to transact...
Ever present are the watching villagers (our audience
of children) ready to take part in the rumbustious fairground songs, the
ambush made by the gallant Captain Abberley and his militia, the excitement
of the chase when Dickon and his mare are pursued by the murderous gang...
The plot twists as varied adventures befall our hero before he regains
safety and the smugglers meet a deservedly gruesome end.
As a chill reminder that scenes like these once took
place, the graves of some of the gang's relatives can still be found in
Devonshire churchyards.
Teachers’ packs include audience songs and tips
on clothing styles for country yokels in 19th century England. This project
includes the participation of a dancing troupe who mime the actions of
the story on a semi-stage, lending extra colour and drama.
